Become a sworn officer

Located in the far southeast corner of the state, the Cheyenne Police Department works to serve and protect Wyoming’s largest city.

Entry Level Applicants: Entry level applicants attend a 13-week Peace Officer Basic Training at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy located in Douglas, WY.  Following the academy, officers are required to complete the Department’s 14-week Field Training Program (FTO Training). New recruits are on an 18-month probationary period from the date of hire. 

Lateral ApplicantsLateral applicants will attend a Criminal Law course at the Law Enforcement Academy located in Douglas, WY and complete the department’s 14-week Field Training Program (FTO Training).  Additionally, the officer will be on an 18-month probationary period from the date of hire. Lateral Signing Bonus of $7,500.00 for officers. Laterals may receive a raise in pay grade after six months of satisfactory employment. See the Lateral Applicant page for more information.


APPLICATION PROCESS 

The Cheyenne Police Department application process is conducted in three phases: 

Phase 1

  • Can be taken at Cheyenne PD on date of entry test.

 *If taken prior to date of entry test, submit your POST test results with your application.

    Phase II

    • Background Investigation
    • Chief’s Interview 
    • Receive a Conditional Offer of Employment

    Phase III

    • Polygraph
    • Psychological Evaluation 
    • Medical Exam/Drug Screen
    • Receive Final Offer of Employment

     


    Before proceeding with the application process, please review the minimum requirements below: 

    • US citizen
    • High School diploma or GED Equivalent
    • 21 years old at time of hire
    • No felony or domestic violence convictions
    • Not have a Dishonorable Discharge from the military

    Any applicant who has any of the following will be disqualified:

    • Three (3) or more moving violation convictions within the previous 36 months (three separate, individual incidents)             
    • Administrative Suspension of a driver’s license; conviction or any form of deferred prosecution qualified by state statute, or as amended, within the previous 36 months from date of disposition, including, but not limited to:
    • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs 
    • Leaving the scene of an accident
    • Fleeing to avoid arrest       
    • Reckless Driving
    • Homicide or assault by motor vehicle

    Any applicant who has any of the following will be disqualified:

    • Used any illegal drug while employed in any law enforcement or prosecutorial position, or while employed in a position which carries with it a high level of responsibility or public trust, will be found unsuitable for employment
    • Been discovered to have misrepresented his/her drug history in completing the application will be found unsuitable for employment
    • Distributed or sold any illegal drug for profit at any time will be found unsuitable for employment
    • Used any illegal drug within the last 5 years
    • Used any inhalant within the last 3 years
    • Used marijuana within the last 12 months
